Time to Connect – An Online Emotional Support Group

As we advance into an era of virtual connections, we leave behind physical connections. We feel a sense of deep satisfaction as we gaze at our endless friend lists on social media and the thrill is heightened when we find the number of likes and comments increasing with each passing moment. And yet as we put away our laptops or set aside our mobiles, there is a lingering vacuum within. Is it in our minds? Is it in our hearts? Or are we just hungry?

No. This is the feeling of being socially disconnected. With the advent of technology, we are definitely spending more time interacting with others, but have we ever stopped to wonder which one of our emotional needs is being satisfied through these interactions? If I have so many friends, and I can chat with acquaintances at any time of the day or night, then what exactly am I missing? What is it that I still need?

Let’s break this down a little bit. What is social media doing for us?  It is keeping us busy. It is keeping us engaged. We have a sense of belongingness as long as we are online. BUT the moment we step into the real world, we crave that physical presence which makes us feel alive… which makes us feel heard. We search for those relationships where someone can give us a hug, stroke our hair, or simply wipe away our tears. We wait for someone who can see us for who we really are rather than the virtual projection I send out through computer networks.

I am me. I have issues. I am not perfect. I do feel insecure. I am single. I am married. I have children. I am lonely.  I have a whole bunch of worries. And I want to share them with someone who cares enough to listen. Really listen. Yes sometimes I would like some advice. But mostly, I want to share. I want to share with real people. People like me… with their own set of concerns and insecurities. People I can actually reach out to when I feel lonely, anxious, or socially disconnected.

Well, it is Time to Connect. Time to Connect is an online emotional support group (as physical meetings are not advisable at this time) where you listen, support and share. Listen. Support. Share.
